Here is the final painting for which "Anne's Kettle" was a study. I'm very happy with the background I chose. I'm very happy with the painting overall. I feel comforted by it. I always feel comforted by copper ware. It's the warm glow. While the teapot comes from my neighbor, Anne, the platter and cream dispenser come from my mother-in-law, Helen. She also graciously donated to the creation of this most satisfying painting experience. Thank you, Helen and Anne!

Anne's Kettle

*
6" x 6" - oil on canvas
*
My neighbor, Anne, has amassed a very large collection of copper ware from her travels abroad. Wow, doesn't that sentence sound smug???? Ha! Anyway, Anne's kettle. I borrowed this one with it's leather wrapped arched handle because it was so impressive. I've never seen anything like it.

I'm doing a painting for the gallery I work with in Dallas - kettle, platter, sugar jar, all copper. It's been a few months since my last attempt at copper, and a study was in order. I cropped a small section of the photo I'm using as reference and whipped this little beauty up today. Specifically, I wanted to be certain I was comfortable with a pale blue background before I committed to it at a larger scale. That was the hard part. The copper kettle, any metallic object for that matter, is the easy part. I can safely say that I am comfortable. That blue makes the copper body and brass lid/spout really pop. Gives it a whole new life.

Nigiri Study - Salmon

Sushi Study #3 - 6" x 6" - oil on canvas
*
The last of the three sushi studies, this one is of salmon. I'm not sure why, but salmon is one of my favorites. Don't get me wrong, tuna is delicious, but there's something in the taste of fresh salmon that is so rich and delicious. Plus, the little strips in the flesh are just so pretty. This was my favorite of the three to create.

"Never Again II" - 6" x 6" - oil on canvas

"Never Again" - 6" x 6" - oil on canvas - M Collier

The latest Artist Challenge subject was a Twinkie. Both M and I went into this thinking it would be an interesting subject, but neither of us expected to have the difficulties with it that we did. First, Twinkies are surprisingly hard to paint. I think it's all the shadow and highlight effects on sponge cake. Brutal. Second, we both had to paint these twice. Yep. Both our finished paintings got ruined. So we decided to name them "Never Again" and "Never Again II", then swore to one another that we'd never paint Twinkies again.

In other news, the Challenge will be on hiatus for a couple months while I continue to work on my health issues. I am cutting way way back right now and focusing all my studio time to a few key gallery pieces and the occasional small study. Our record summer heat here in the valley has made it incredibly difficult for me not to crash, adrenally speaking, over and over, and I'm wiped out. So, my commitments are being dialed down to the basic necessities. For a Type A person such as myself, this has been a frustrating year. Then again, maybe this is ultimately good for me. When I feel up to it, I'd like to begin the Challenges again, hopefully sooner rather than later. The guilt of holding things up over and over this summer was just too much to bear. I'd rather jump back in when I know I can hold up my end of the deal.
