Nigiri Study - Tuna

Sushi Study #2 - oil on canvas - 6"x 6"
*
The 2nd sushi study as I get into some more complicated sushi paintings. Funny how it always seems sushi is going to be much harder to paint than it ends up being in the end. It's the rice I fear most. You're basically painting several shades of white in highlight and shadow. Kind of an all or nothing subject. Too much variation and it looks as if the rice was cooked in sewer water. Too little, it goes flat and you'd swear your 4 year old niece could do a better job blindfolded.

Cut Roll Study - Salmon and Tuna

Sushi Study #1 - oil on canvas - 6" x 6"
*
I'm gearing up to work on some very detailed sushi paintings. Because I hadn't attempted this subject in a little while (okay, in a LONG while), I wanted to brush up. Best way to do that is to do some studies. I'm working on three studies. First one being the one you see above. These cut roll pieces came in a little plastic box, not very photogenic if you ask me, so I fussed them up on one of my own little condiment dishes.

Are you anything like me, scared to death to eat off of Japanese hand fired pottery for fear of lead poisoning? I know that sounds a bit extreme, but ever since some well meaning freak verbally accosted me in an international food store while I was buying waaaaaaayyyyyyyy too many oriental plates and bowls for still life subjects last year - Oh, did I neglect to tell you that story?? This was back during the melamine scare and he wanted me to be safe, so he unloaded all sorts of hideous data on me until I nearly sh*t myself in the housewares isle. Ya, that was fun. - I've had a hard time using them for anything but still lifes.

6 of 1 (or half a dozen of the other)

6 - 6" x 6" paintings in oil on canvas
*

A short series of cupcakes, some quick studies to go with the larger detailed dessert paintings I had sold through the gallery previously. Sometimes it does an artist's brain some good to do a few quick studies. These helped me immensely. Now, I'm ready to tackle more of the detailed works again.

Egg #14

6" x 6" - oil on canvas - SOLD
*
I'm working on several paintings for three galleries and a couple commissions right now. Daily paintings remain a bit sparse at this time. Ideally, I'd like two posts per week in the coming weeks to be of daily paintings, offered up for sale directly through my blog and a Paypal link. Here's the first one for this week. My next one will be in the spirit of the 4th, or more specifically it will be an excuse for me to visit the fireworks stand down the street. Bet that narrows down the subject for you, doesn't it??? I'm a woman of little mystery these days.
