The latest Artist Challenge subject was a Twinkie. Both M and I went into this thinking it would be an interesting subject, but neither of us expected to have the difficulties with it that we did. First, Twinkies are surprisingly hard to paint. I think it's all the shadow and highlight effects on sponge cake. Brutal. Second, we both had to paint these twice. Yep. Both our finished paintings got ruined. So we decided to name them "Never Again" and "Never Again II", then swore to one another that we'd never paint Twinkies again.

In other news, the Challenge will be on hiatus for a couple months while I continue to work on my health issues. I am cutting way way back right now and focusing all my studio time to a few key gallery pieces and the occasional small study. Our record summer heat here in the valley has made it incredibly difficult for me not to crash, adrenally speaking, over and over, and I'm wiped out. So, my commitments are being dialed down to the basic necessities. For a Type A person such as myself, this has been a frustrating year. Then again, maybe this is ultimately good for me. When I feel up to it, I'd like to begin the Challenges again, hopefully sooner rather than later. The guilt of holding things up over and over this summer was just too much to bear. I'd rather jump back in when I know I can hold up my end of the deal.

How can you paint so small? Terrific painting.

Take care of yourself. I hope you are back in good health soon!

You and M are brave souls... and tenacious. It was worth all the trouble. These are sooo fun!
