I'm gearing up to work on some very detailed sushi paintings. Because I hadn't attempted this subject in a little while (okay, in a LONG while), I wanted to brush up. Best way to do that is to do some studies. I'm working on three studies. First one being the one you see above. These cut roll pieces came in a little plastic box, not very photogenic if you ask me, so I fussed them up on one of my own little condiment dishes.

Are you anything like me, scared to death to eat off of Japanese hand fired pottery for fear of lead poisoning? I know that sounds a bit extreme, but ever since some well meaning freak verbally accosted me in an international food store while I was buying waaaaaaayyyyyyyy too many oriental plates and bowls for still life subjects last year - Oh, did I neglect to tell you that story?? This was back during the melamine scare and he wanted me to be safe, so he unloaded all sorts of hideous data on me until I nearly sh*t myself in the housewares isle. Ya, that was fun. - I've had a hard time using them for anything but still lifes.

I never knew food could be so dramatic! Your work always amazes and inspires, Jelaine!
It's funny that what some people say can really put the fear into us. I would probably have done the same Jelaine.
This is nice, and I have to say that your 'dangerous/poisonous' dish is my favorite part :)
There's always some scare or other - I can't keep up with them! I love this piece - there is something really appealing to me about the color and way you handled the background!
