Our First Subject: White Rabbit Candy, bought at an Asian grocery because I was so taken with the wild-eyed bunny on the front of the bag.
*
In late July I pitched an idea to three other artists whose style was similar to my own. Being a full time artist can often make the "joy" of art feel like the "job" of art. Having an outlet that isn't intended for any particular location (gallery, commission, eBay, etc.) but is meant solely for childlike creative play, is so important. My pitch went as follows:
*
Once a month, one of us picks an object to be the central focus of a painting. As we are scattered across the country, M and I being on the West Coast, Neil and Otto being in the Atlanta area, we'd need to either obtain four of one object and ship it out to the other three, or we'd need to pick an object which all four of us could obtain from our local national chain stores. How we choose to arrange that object for painting is entirely up to the individual and will remain a secret to us all until the month is up and we exchange jpeg's of our completed paintings. Because we are all realists and all lean toward strong dark/light contrast, the challenge will be in how we choose to portray the object, what we pair it with, how we arrange the setup, what story each of us wants to tell with our paintings.
*
For me, that is really exciting. It's somehow more difficult, and I love difficult. I was weaned on difficult. Also, the thrill of knowing that at the end of each month it will be like Christmas morning when something I've anticipated and obsessed over will finally be mine to see, that something being three other paintings. Although someone from among the group who shall remain nameless (coughMcough) kept asking probing questions about what I was doing with the object for my painting. SOMEONE was one of those kids who would sneak downstairs before Christmas morning to pry the tape off their gifts, weren't they?
*
I kind of like the whole analytical aspect of it as well. You learn a lot about yourself and other people by how they interpret a subject. For instance, this month I learned that I was probably a laudanum addict in a past life. Also, Neil's painting gave me a toothache because after I looked at it, I got REALLY hungry for those candies, and since I was the one to choose the first object for our monthly challenge, that meant I had a bag of that stuff sitting in my studio, minus the pieces I'd sent to the other three. Neil, I'll be mailing what's left of that bag to you, buddy!!! And the bill for my root canal. In fact, let's rename your piece "Cavity Goblet". ;o)

Now on to the next challenge subject..........

Oh my goodness - those are all so great!

The Queen card with the rabbit candy!
The goblet reflecting the room!
The rabbits and shadows in the others!

I found this blog via the dailypainters.com. I'll be checking back often!

The Internet is so wonderful - and while spending all of my time looking at good artist's work, I can avoid practicing my own painting. What's not to love?!

Thank you for sharing.

Jelaine, these are all just wonderful, such a fun idea, and so great that the rest of us get to share in the anticipation every month! (Can I claim yours as my favorite this month?)

What a great concept. At first glance I recognized all four artists for their respective style and content. Even though they are so well matched that you could easily think they were all done by the same artist.

The white rabbit from ''Alice in Wonderland''might have been an influence for two of the paintings. In Jelaine, because of the Queen of Heart....and one cannot dismiss the white rabbit's foot as a good luck charm when playing card games. For Neil...his classic silver goblet recurring in this piece always reminds me on a surreal interior one might see in Tom Petty's ''Don't come around here no more'', based in the fable story.

As for M, her signature long shadows return as a haunting silhouette of the white rabbit. Here it reminded me of the movie poster for the 1950 James Stewart film, ''Harvey''....

And for Otto, the stillness of the floating rabbit has a zen quality of one of the animals of the Chinese Horoscope.

This may not be the year of the Hare....but as a foursome, it is a winning combination that seem to have some mystery lingering beyond the imagery. BRILLIANT!!!

What a fantastic project!! Congratulations to all of you. Your work has always delighted and inspired me and I always check into see what you have done each day. This new 'series' is going to make your regular viewers more hungry for a this type of fix. Jelaine, I am a painter too and I am drooling over that blue glass and playing card underneath it... More. What a great idea. I have admired the work of all four of you and these four paintings really are stunning. I'm now running off to work out where I might have a space on my wall to put them....

Hello, All! I am absolutely THRILLED to see such a positive response to this little project. It has given me great joy to be a part of, and I had my fingers crossed that it would be fun for everyone who had the chance to view it as well. Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts!!! I, too, am eagerly anticipating the next challenge subject because the first experience was such a therapeutic and whimsical experience. I want to continue to have this to look forward to, the opportunity to go absolutely apesnot with a childlike thrill for painting "just for fun", as M puts it. :o)

This is such a cool idea! Four artists who I really admire, painting each month, with the same subject, yet separate interpretations. I love this.
