Environmental Influence 7

I never understood "Sex and The City". I tried to get into it, to feel the excitement all my girlfriends felt when a new episode came around, but to no avail. I thought parts of it were interesting and well done, but I had little interest in any of the characters. Particularly Carrie. No, I genuinely disliked the character of Carrie, and I disliked her shoe fetish. It seemed so over-the-top to me. I like shoes. I have several pair. They're not Blahniks, however. Sorry. I prefer the idea of walking without pain. Call me crazy.
*
Oddly enough, one day I was making my way through a store and these bright orange heels, yes HEELS, caught my eye. And they wouldn't let me ignore them. They were so cute, so perky. I figured I'd go ahead and try a pair on, prove to myself that the agony they'd induce would end the attraction instantly. However, that is not what happened. What did happen is that they fit just right, looked amazing on my feet (perhaps the fact that my toenails were painted the exact same color improved my opinion of them) and made me feel the way I do when I am viewing art. That last part still has me puzzled, but it's true.
*
I've worn them out and about once or twice, and I feel somehow special in them, decadent even, but they are beginning to affect me the way some of my favorite props for paintings do, and I can't bring myself to risk scratching them with outings. I will confess here and now that I........I...I keep them on my studio table to look at when I need an extra boost of creative energy. Silly high heeled girl shoes. They make me think of orange Creamsicles and fire glazed pottery, sunsets in Hawaii and burnt sienna paint, one of my favorites. I also caught myself pausing by the shoe section while in a department store the other day. Did I just say that?!?! I know! The mind boggles.

I'm putting my foot down here and now (no pun intended) by stating that while I'll now admit some tenuous connection to a much beloved television character with whom I have little else in common, and while I may allow myself a little more experimentation with "pretty" shoes in the future, I absolutely refuse to ever ever EVER devolve into this particular white hot mess.

Hie thee now, and get thee another pair! Put the new ones in the studio and actually WEAR the others. You'll thank me later. I had a pair of Donald J. Pliners that I felt that way about. They wore out. I was devistated. So I searched eBay (of course) and found another pair in my size. It was like a reunion with an old friend.

I'm afraid two pairs of these is a little out of my price range, otherwise I'd take your advice. :o)

Adorable shoes and I loved your story about them! It reminded me of a painting at a local showing some years ago. It kept speaking to me, even though I tried to avoid it. I walked all over the gallery and it called me back time and time again. I bought it -- finally -- and have never regretted it though it put a dent in my finances for quite a while. LOL!!

I'm a shoe girl too. These are fabulous and that they're comfy on top of that is a bonus!
Love the post.

I can relate to this post so much. Never saw what the big To Do was with the show. Offended me a bit as a female. Love the shoes though. I could use a pair just like that. Absolutely hate shoes that hurt these days though. Most of the time you do get what you pay for.

Hey there! Thanks for sharing your thoughts and similar stories. I love reading other people's takes on similar experiences.

Robin, maybe the reason I feel so good in them is because I PAID. I guess I got my money's worth.

Hey Jelaine! Love the story. I adore beautiful shoes and have endured pain for beauty. Although as I matured I realized the compromise wasn't completely worth it, but then again my lifestyle changed and am barefoot most of the time in my studio! But I still have several super high heels in my closet that I just can't part with. Being a "Jersey Girl" and working in corporate NYC for over 25 years, I can somehow understand the show and actually must confess that I have found the wildness purely entertaining. Guess it's a little like Seinfeld...you "get it" more if you're from there. Same with "Absolutely Fabulous" aka "AbFab" another wild one! :o) P.S. When I'd buy shoes I'd be sure to get a pair in every color so as not miss them when they wore out! Definitely buy another pair! As they say, "Go girl!" (snap snap) Jeanne
